Jerry Cohen

Jerry Cohen, longtime resident of Livermore and Walnut Creek, died Dec. 24. He was 85.

Cohen was born on Oct. 5, 1928, in Detroit, Mich. to Harry and Rose Cohen. He grew up in the Detroit area and went to high school at Cass Tech. Cohen attended college at the University of Michigan majoring in chemistry, and served in the United State Air Force with a rank of captain at the time he completed his service. He later received a master's degree in public heath from the University of Michigan.

Cohen married Patricia Tully from Minn. in 1956. In 1961, he moved his family to Livermore Calif. and began a 20 year career at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). At LLNL, he worked as a program manager for a number of waste management and hazard assessment projects. In 1981, he left the Lab and began a 20-year career with Science Applications International Corporation where he worked as a senior scientist in the Energy and Environmental Evaluation Division. In 2001, he retired and moved to Walnut Creek.

Cohen enjoyed traveling, the theater, playing tennis and supported a number of causes that were of interest to him.

Cohen was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia, and siblings, Sylvia, Albert and Lou. He is survived by a daughter, Robin Baldini (Fred); a son, Steven; five grandchildren, Shelley Danner (Travis), Daniel Baldini, Alan Cohen, Evan Cohen, and Amy Baldini. The family held a private celebration of his life.
