Howard James Rien

Lab retiree Howard James Rien died March 14. He was 84.

Rien was born Aug. 15, 1925. In 1942, at 17, he joined the Navy. After World War II ended, he worked for his father in the bearing business.

Rien began his career at LLNL in 1964 as a technical associate. He worked in that position until 1980. From 1981 through 1987, at the time he retired, he worked as a senior engineering associate. He became a licensed mechanical engineer for the state of California in 1978.

He also worked at the Nevada Test Site, Site 300, and Rocky Flats in Colorado. He spent time in the main machine shop doing supervisory work.

He enjoyed camping and fishing with his sons when they were young.

Rien is survived by his third wife, Dorothy Ann Rien; sons, David James Rien of Houston, Texas, Thomas Rien of Saratoga, Calif., Richard Raymond Rien of Sacramento, Timothy Rien and Toby Rien; 10 grand children, and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Ailine Rien; and his son, Robert G. Rien.
