Hartley Lloyd Halunen

Hartley Lloyd Halunen, a Lab retiree, died July 10 after a three-year struggle with cancer. He was 79.

Halunen was born July 21, 1931, in Virginia, Minn. He married Lois Charnley on Valentine’s Day in 1952.

After the birth of their three children, they moved the family to California, first to Oakland, then settling in Livermore in 1966. Halunen worked in the Lab’s Procurement Department as a contracts manager until he retired in 1989.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of San Francisco, and was well known for his negotiating skills.

Hartley enjoyed gardening, and was a talented musician and dancer. An avid traveler, he and his wife Lois traveled all over the world, including sixty-eight countries on six continents, and also enjoyed numerous cruises.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Roger Halunen of San Anselmo Calif., daughter Laura Halunen Thournir of Livermore, and grandsons Tyler and Thomas Thournir. He also is survived by brothers Rodney Halunen of Virginia, Minn.; Donald Halunen of Tower, Minn.; Daniel Nakari of Santa Monica, Calif., sisters Patricia Willis of Duluth, Minn.; and Gayle Morehead of Batavia, Ohio; one aunt, Terry Haapala of Virginia, Minn., and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Linda Halunen, who died in March.

Private services are planned and the scattering of ashes will take place at a Hawaiian ceremony in Maui.
