Gerald (Jerry) Goudreau

Gerald (Jerry) Goudreau, a Lab retiree, died Dec. 30 in his home after a long illness.

A graduate of the University of Notre Dame and the University of Delaware, he received his Ph.D. in civil engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.

Goudreau joined the Laboratory in 1970 and spent most of his career as a research engineer. He worked in the Lab's Applied Mechanics Group in the Nuclear Explosives Engineering Division and founded and led the Methods Development Group in Engineering. This group created a set of advanced engineering simulation tools and demonstrated their applicability to a broad range of Laboratory and industrial problems. These software tools led to commercial spin-offs and established new industrial practices for such processes as car crash design, using simulation rather than physical testing.

Goudreau retired in 1998 and for several years thereafter continued to provide technical consultation to Engineering.

He is survived by his wife, Mary, his children, Tom, Stephen, Ann, Beth, and Mary, and seven grandchildren.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 11 a.m., Jan. 6, at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church, 678 Enos Way, Livermore, CA 94551. A reception will be held in the parish hall following the mass.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to Freedom from Hunger, 1644 DaVinci Court, Davis, CA 95618.

Condolences may be sent to Mary Goudreau, 6768 Felicia Ave., Livermore, CA 94550.
