Edith Scadden Delucchi

Edith Scadden Delucchi, a retired Lab chemist, died Jan. 2. She was 87.

Born May 6, 1925 to Thomas Alfred and Mildred Octavia (Hickey) Scadden, in San Francisco, she attended St. Rose Academy in San Francisco. In 1947 she earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from U.C. Berkeley.

She was hired as a nuclear chemist for the new Naval Radiological Defense Laboratory (NRDL) at Hunters Point, San Francisco, to address the new challenges from nuclear weapons. She worked at NRDL 21 years and published several research articles in scientific journals.

In 1967 she married Arnaldo (Arnie) Augusto Delucchi who also worked at NRDL. In 1969 when the Navy closed NRDL, she had retired, and shortly after, her husband was hired at LLNL.

In 1970 the couple moved to their present home in Danville. In 1975 she joined the LLNL as a nuclear chemist to help process samples from underground nuclear tests. She retired in 1991.

She was preceded in death by her sisters Ruth Gerber and Mildred Raile, and her brother Thomas Alfred.

She is survived by 13 nephews and nieces, 21 grand nephews and nieces, and many friends.

Funeral services will be held Jan. 11 at the Oakmont Memorial Park and Mortuary at 2099 Reliez Valley Road, Lafayette, Calif. Viewing will be in the Redwood Chapel from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., immediately followed by a service and interment.

A celebration of life will be held at the restaurant Zio Fraedo's at 611 Gregory Lane, Pleasant Hill. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Alzheimer's Disease Research or to a favorite charity.
