Earl Eugene Schultz, Jr

Earl Eugene “Gene” Schultz, Jr., a founder of DOE’s Computer Incident Advisory Capability (CIAC), died Sunday, Oct. 2. He was 65.

A memorial service for Schultz will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, at Cornerstone Fellowship, 348 North Canyons Parkway, Livermore.

Schultz formed then managed the CIAC cyber security response team for DOE at the Laboratory from 1986-92. This was the first formal cyber security incident response team, predating the U.S. Computer Emergency Response Team Coordination Center (CERT/CC) by several years. He also was instrumental in the founding of the Forum of Incident Response and Security Teams, or FIRST. During his career, Schultz was a professor of computer science at UC Davis, Purdue University and UC Berkeley.

Born in Chicago Sept. 10, 1946, Schultz’s family moved to Lafayette, Calif. in 1948. Schultz graduated from UCLA and earned his master of science degree and Ph.D in cognitive science in 1977 from Purdue.

Schultz is survived by his wife of 36 years, Cathy Brown Schultz; father, Gene Schultz, Sr.; sister, Nancy Baker; daughters and their spouses, Sarah and Tim Vanier, Rachel and Duc Nguyen, Leah and Nathan Martin; and two grandchildren, Nola and Drake Nguyen.

Donations in his memory may be made to Caring Bridge.org.
