Dale Edwin Nielsen

Dale Edwin Nielsen, an emeritus associate director who began work as a physicist in the early days of the Laboratory, died Jan. 6 in Sandy, Utah. He was 84.

A resident of Midway, Utah, he was born June 23, 1924, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, the eighth of nine children of Jesse Hans Nielsen and Florence Ruth Kingston Nielsen.

He was a veteran of both World War II and the Korean War. After graduating from U.C. Berkeley in 1947, he worked as a physicist at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory and then, beginning in 1952, at LLNL. He worked at the Lab until 1983, when he was named an emeritus associate sirector. Nielsen had served as associate director for Administration. He was also the first leader of Z Division.

He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and served in many church callings including bishop, stake president and temple sealer.

He and his wife also served an LDS church mission in Bristol England from 1992-1994.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Erma Cox Nielsen; five children, Dale Nielsen, Jr. of Livermore; Peter Nielsen of South Jordan, Utah; Christopher Nielsen of Fremont, Calif.; Paul Nielsen of Laurel, Md.; and Carol Probst of Midway, Utah; 29 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. He also is survived by his younger sister, Lola Cummings of Pleasanton.
