Carol Kaufman Briggs

Carol Kaufman Briggs, a resident of Lafayette,, Calif., who had worked at the Lab as a research assistant, died March 24 after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was 78.

Born April 18, 1930, in Pittsburgh, Pa., she was the daughter of Albert R. Kaufman, M.D., and Ardis M. Kaufman, M.D.

Briggs majored in chemistry and graduated with honors from Mt. Holyoke College in 1952. She taught biology and chemistry at Oak Grove School in Vassalboro, Maine. She worked as a laboratory assistant at the National Heart Institute, National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md. and had worked at LLNL part-time for 20 years.

She was a past active member of the American Association of University Women, the Mulberry Branch of Children’s Hospital and the Castlewood Country Club (Castlettes). She enjoyed the Spinning Wheel Antique Club.

Before moving to Lafayette, she was a resident of Pleasanton for 42 years.

Briggs was preceded in death by her sister, Ardis C. Reid and her brother, Albert Samuel Kaufman.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, John Allen Briggs; three children, Samuel Kaufman Briggs, John Ransburgh Briggs and Anne Carol Stern; five grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Margaret F. Kaufman; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Interment will be private, but a memorial service will be held April 24 at 2 p.m. at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, 1550 Diablo Road, Danville. A reception will follow.
