Aubrey Hulse

Aubrey James (Jim) Hulse, a resident of Benicia, died Oct. 9 from a blood infection. He was 91.

Born in Amoy, China, on January 16, 1918, he grew up in Amoy and graduated from Lingnan University in Guangzhou (Canton), China, with a degree in physics.

He and his wife Evelyn came to the United States in 1942 in a prisoner exchange between the United States and Japan arranged by the Red Cross. He served in the Marine Corps during World War II in China and in the Asian theatre.

After the war, he worked at the Lawrence Berkeley Lab and then transferred to LLNL at the time of its opening in the 1950s.

Hulse was asked to oversee the construction and start of Site 300. After retirement, he worked for the Lab as a consultant.

He was preceded in death by his wife Evelyn.

He is survived by his daughter Alison and her husband Jon; his granddaughters, Joy and Christine Read; and his family and friends at his church.

Services will be held at Community Presbyterian Church, 2800 Georgia St., Vallejo, Calif., on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 1:30 p.m. Interrnment will be private.
