Alfred Martin Ban

Alfred Martin Ban died April 20. He was 87.

Born in San Francisco on Aug. 29, 1923, to Martino Damjanovich and Ella Rostrela, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

In the 1960s, he bought his house in Calistoga and enjoyed tending his vineyard, making wine, playing golf, reading, working in his barn and spending time with his wife, family and friends.

Ban retired from the Laboratory in 1983.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Bess Ban; children, Joyce Neufeld of Placerville and Joan Houser of Livermore; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
