Alex Lorenz

Alex Lorenz, a former Lab nuclear physicist, died Sept. 4 at the Care Center of Rossmoor. He was 80.

Born in Brussels, Belgium on Jan. 9, 1929, Lorenz immigrated to the United States in 1946. After serving two years in the U. S. Army, he received a degree in physics at City College of New York.

In 1955, he married Dolores Link and later moved to Berkeley, where he earned his graduate degree in nuclear physics. In 1958, they relocated to Pleasanton, where he worked as a nuclear physicist at LLNL.

In 1966, they moved to Vienna, Austria where he was employed by the International Atomic Energy Agency until his retirement in 1989.

After relocating to Boulder, Colo., he worked as a technical scientific translator and interpreter of Russian and French. He also was very active in the Boulder Art Association, presiding as president, membership chairman and editor of the Boulder Art Association Newsletter.

Since moving to Rossmoor in 2003, he participated in the Rossmoor Art Association, serving on the board, taking classes and exhibiting his paintings. He also enjoyed music, dancing with the Rossmoor Social Dance Club and walking in the Rossmoor hills.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Dolores; daughter, Diane, and son-in-law, Jon Olsen of Boulder; son, Gregory, and daughter-in-law, Kim of Oakland; two grandchildren, Zachary and Ava; a brother, George of France; and nephews and cousins.

Private family services were held Sept. 6. A memorial tribute was held
Nov. 1 in Rossmoor.
