As a new Computing Scholar in the summer of 2019, I considered myself a reasonably strong programmer, but I knew I lacked experience with industry standards such as version control, continuous integration, and documentation. While working at the Lab, I finally got hands on experience using Git, Elastic tools for monitoring and security, and I learned how to write and deploy Docker containers. While I'm proud of those accomplishments, I should mention I didn't come into the Lab with any of those skills already acquired. At first, I thought I'd be out of my depth here, but LLNL trains their mentors to be excellent teachers who break big projects into tasks that are challenging yet feasible. The entire process feels really empowering because I ended up completing tasks that I previously didn't understand at all.
