The annual Research SLAM cycle culminates with the largest-ever event, the inaugural National Lab Research SLAM on Nov. 15.

Each of the 17 DOE laboratories will send one researcher to the National Lab Research SLAM, a hybrid event taking place on Capitol Hill and livestreamed across the country.

Brandon Zimmerman will represent Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, bringing his talk on “3D Printing the Future: Designing Additively Manufactured Materials for Extreme Environments” to Washington, D.C.

Each participant has three minutes and a single slide to share their research in an engaging and entertaining way. A panel of judges, listed below, will evaluate each finalist on their presentation and select the winners. A People’s Choice winner also will be selected by the in-person and virtual audiences.

Judges:

  • France Córdova, 14th director, National Science Foundation
  • Marcia McNutt, president, National Academy of Sciences
  • David M. Turk, deputy secretary of energy, U.S. Department of Energy
  • Steve Welby, Office of Science and Technology Policy’s deputy director for national security

The inaugural National Lab Research SLAM showcases not only the broad and innovative research happening across the DOE national lab complex, but also the outstanding talent of early-career researchers working to address complex challenges in energy security, national security, environmental resilience and scientific discovery.
