Science on Screen: Livermorium vs. Iron Man

Who: The fourth installment in the Science on Screen series features Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) scientist, Dawn Shaughnessy, who will present "Behold Livermorium: A Quest for New Elements." In this informative and entertaining lecture, Shaughnessy will cover how scientists create new elements and how their nuclear and chemical properties compare to their naturally occurring counterparts. Shaughnessy also will discuss the journey from element discovery to element naming, culminating with the official naming of element 116 as Livermorium, in honor of the scientists and research that has been done at LLNL since its discovery. This lecture is paired with the feature-length film, Iron Man 2" (PG-13).

What: The Science on Screen series, geared for middle- and high-school students, creatively pairs cutting-edge science presented by leading Lab researchers with a popular feature film on a similar subject matter. The goal of the series is to provide the perfect combination of enlightenment and entertainment to inspire and engage students in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
