Lawrence Livermore National Security donates $40,000 to area school districts

Lawrence Livermore National Security (LLNS), the entity that manages Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) for the Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration, has donated $40,000 to local school districts in support of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education.

The checks were delivered during an installment of LLNL’s Science on Saturday lecture series at the Bankhead Theater in downtown Livermore, an event that attracted nearly 1,000 students.

Just before the Science on Saturday presentation "Green Power: Making Electricity out of Thin Air," LLNL Deputy Director Tom Gioconda presented $10,000 checks totaling $40,000 to the school districts of Livermore, Pleasanton, Dublin and Tracy.

"The Laboratory is a strong proponent of science, technology, engineering and math education for students at all stages of learning, from K-12 all the way to the postdoc level," Gioconda said. "Laboratory employees and LLNS have a long history of giving generously to the community. We hope this contribution will help the school districts inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers."

LLNS, the Laboratory and its employees donate more than $3.5 million each year to charitable and educational causes throughout the region.
