Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren and members of her district office staff visited Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Monday accompanied by students and faculty from the Franklin-McKinley School District's College Connection Academy middle school. The Franklin-McKinley School District is located in San Jose, which is part of Lofgren's Silicon Valley area Congressional District. Lofgren initiated the visit to provide the students with an upclose look at the Lab's science and technology.
The morning itinerary included a Lab overview by Deputy Director for Science and Technology Bill Goldstein, a presentation on computational modeling and simulation by Computation Associate Director Dona Crawford, and a presentation on the Cardioid Project by computational physicist Dave Richards. The group was joined at lunch by five LLNL scientists who discussed their careers and work at the Lab. They included biologist Crystal Jaing, research engineer Chris Spadaccini, Energy division group leader A.J. Simon, Computation group leader Vic Castillo and Forensic Science Director Brad Hart.
The afternoon concluded with a tour of the National Ignition Facility and a brief Fun with Science presentation at the Discovery Center.
