Barty named SPIE Fellow
He has published more than 150 manuscripts and presented more than 200 invited talks, spanning topics in lasers, optics, materials science, medicine, chemistry, engineering and physics. During his career, he has founded both the biennial international meeting on Ultrafast Optics and the International Conference on Ultrahigh Intensity Lasers. Currently, he serves as co-chair of the International Committee on Ultrahigh Intensity Lasers.
His technical interests include development of new optical capabilities for fusion energy drivers, directed energy systems, nuclear photo-science, high-energy-density science, fast ignition and laser-based x-ray applications of relevance to national security-related missions, programs and projects.
SPIE includes more than 180,000 members from more than 170 countries to advance an interdisciplinary approach to the science and application of light. Fellows are members of distinction who have been selected based on their significant scientific and technical contributions in the fields of optics, photonics and imaging. More than 900 SPIE members have become fellows since the society's inception in 1955.
