Symposium looks at legacy of lasers and fusion

The Laboratory will begin its celebration of the dedication of the National Ignition Facility with a special symposium on the long and distinguished history of lasers and inertial confinement fusion research at LLNL and the contributions of national and international collaborators over the last 50 years.

The symposium, "ICF Lasers, Fusion and Other Applications — Past, Present and Future" will begin at 1 p.m. at the Robert Livermore Community Center on Thursday, May 28. It will be broadcast on Lab TV, Channel 2. Employees who do not have access to Lab TV may watch the symposium in the auditoriums in Bldgs. 123, 155, 361 and 482.

"The Laboratory has been a longtime leader in laser and fusion research. With the dedication of the National Ignition Facility approaching, it is fitting that we take time to celebrate that legacy as well as look to future achievements," explained former Lab Director Bruce Tarter, who organized the symposium.

The symposium is divided into two sessions, the first, "The Era Leading to NIF," will be moderated by John Holzrichter, the former director of Laboratory Directed Research and Development. The second session, "The NIF and Its Future," will be moderated by Tarter.
