Statement from Lab Director Michael Anastasio on DOE initiative to support education
Director Michael Anastasio commended the education initiative announced today by Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham, calling for the Department of Energy and its national laboratories to promote science education and prepare the next generation of scientists and engineers.
"I applaud the Secretary’s call to enhance science education," Anastasio said. "Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has long been committed to promoting science education for the benefit of the nation and our local communities."
The Laboratory spends more than $700,000 (in-kind) dollars in local K-12 education outreach each year.
"Through our Science and Technology Education Program and the Edward Teller Education Center, our Laboratory provides teacher professional development and curriculum enhancement for kindergarten through community college," Anastasio added. "Our Laboratory is a major sponsor of the annual Tri-Valley Science & Engineering Fair, which is affiliated with the Intel International Science Fair, and three Expanding Your Horizons Conferences for young women in middle and high school. We reach out directly to students of all ages by hosting career fairs, school tour programs and classroom speakers."
"As a national laboratory, we shoulder significant science education responsibilities," Anastasio summed up. "We look forward to working with DOE in promoting science education to prepare the next generation of scientists and engineers."
