LIVERMORE, California – Space is still available for teachers to participate in the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) 2016 Teacher Research Academy (TRA). The TRA offers middle and high school science teachers and community college faculty a professional development curriculum during the summer months at the Edward Teller Education Center (ETEC) at LLNL. Teachers are given the opportunity to learn about cutting-edge scientific research conducted at the Laboratory and experience the application of real-world science.

The academy model allows teachers to progress through four levels of instruction, with each level building on the knowledge and experience of the preceding level. Participants engage in a continuum of standards-based instruction in line with Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), enabling them to progress from novice to mastery in exciting scientific disciplines such as biotechnology, computational modeling, fusion and astrophysics, technical writing and 3D print and design .

The TRA’s will be held in June and July. Here is the complete schedule of academies and workshops:

3D Print & Design

  • July 6-8: 3D Print & Design - Level I
  • July 11-15: 3D Print & Design - Level II
  • July 25-29: 3D Print & Design - Level III

Biotechnology Research Academy

  • June 20-22: Biotechnology Research Academy - Level I
  • June 27-July 1: Biotechnology Research Academy - Level II
  • July 25-29: Biotechnology Research Academy - Level III

Computational Modeling Academy

  • June 20-24: Computational Modeling Academy - Level I
  • June 27-July 1: Computational Modeling Academy - Level II
  • July 25-29: Computational Modeling Academy - Level III

Fusion & Astrophysics Research Academy

  • July 6-8: Fusion & Astrophysics Research Academy - Level I
  • July 11-15: Fusion & Astrophysics Research Academy - Level II
  • July 25-29: Fusion & Astrophysics Research Academy - Level III

Technical Writing for Science Class

  • June 23-24: Technical Writing for Science Class
  • July 18-19: Technical Writing for Science Class

Participating teachers will experience the nature of science through direct involvement and use of scientific equipment, processes and practices found in research labs. They will meet LLNL scientists, visit research laboratories, observe science being performed in a lab and will learn technical writing skills to better communicate scientific information.

U.S. citizenship is required to participate in the TRA. Register online. There is a $20 registration fee per workshop.
