Jean Shuler, the Computation Systems Support deputy division leader, has a special connection with the HOME (Helping Others More Effectively) Campaign.

Not only has she contributed to the annual charity drive during her Lab career and helped organize many HOME events, but she also has competed in the "Run for HOME" since its inception in the late 1970s, winning 14 consectutive first place awards, at ages 50 to 64.

Her passion for running began with lunchtime jogs with a co-worker. "It’s a way to stay fit and foster friendships," she said.

Again this year, she placed first in the master women’s runner category and donated her award of $100 to the Tri-Valley Expanding Your Horizons in Math and Science (EYH) conference.

What is now known as the "Run for HOME" spawned from a biannual divisional competition held inside the perimeter of the Livermore site, and sponsored by "Roadrunners", a LLESA networking group of serious runners that often competed with corporate teams throughout the Bay Area and Silicon Valley.

Shuler was a member of Roadrunners and said that the races conducted twice a year became very successful and well known. When the HOME Campaign was first established, the running club was asked to hold one of its competitions to kick off the campaign on Halloween.

Today, the Run for HOME still signals the start of the Lab’s season of giving.  Through the years, the route may have been modified, but the focus remains the same.

"The HOME Campaign is a great opportunity for people to work collectively for a good cause." Shuler said. "There are so many agencies that need our help."
