Rokaya Al-Ayat Selected As Director of Laboratory Science and Technology Office

LIVERMORE, Calif.--Rokaya Al-Ayat has been selected as director of the Laboratory Science and Technology Office (LSTO) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. She has served as the LSTO acting director since June.

In her role as director, Al-Ayat will oversee the Laboratory Directed Research and Development Program, the annual University of California Science and Technology Assessment process, public interest work projects, the Director's Distinguished Lecturer Series and the Laboratory Science and Technology Awards System.

Prior to being LSTO acting director, Al-Ayat served as deputy director of LSTO since 1995 where she managed the Laboratory Directed Research and Development Program.

"Rokaya's leadership experience in the LSTO and her excellent management and technical skills make her the perfect selection for this position," said Jeffrey Wadsworth, deputy director for Science and Technology. "While serving as deputy director for LSTO, Rokaya proved her ability to promote key laboratory scientific and technical accomplishments. As LSTO Director, she will continue to work with laboratory management to ensure that LLNL remains a superior research institution."

Al-Ayat joined the LLNL Engineering Directorate in 1978 where she assumed various responsibilities including group leader and associate division leader for Systems Sciences. She also served as an associate program leader for the DOE Nuclear Safeguards Program. Al-Ayat started her career as a research engineer at the University of California, Berkeley.

"LSTO has a broader mission of serving as an institutional advocate for laboratory science and technology and promoting the scientific and technical accomplishments of the scientists and engineers," Al-Ayat said.

Al-Ayat has an M.S. and Ph.D. in applied mathematics and a Masters of Engineering in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research. She is a member of several professional societies, has published numerous papers, and has served on many internal and external committees.

"In the current environment, it is more important than ever that we strive to increase and effectively manage the laboratory investment in far-reaching research and development efforts and to foster outstanding science and technology," Al-Ayat said.
