NNSA green-lights new open campus building

The Laboratory has received approval from the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) to take a first step toward building a new facility for the High Performance Computing Innovation Center (HPCIC) in the Livermore Valley Open Campus (LVOC).

As a result, Lawrence Livermore National Security, LLC (LLNS) has released a Notice of Opportunity in Fed Biz Ops seeking partners interested in assisting LLNS in developing a proposal for external financing of the facility.  

The partners, to be selected through a competitive process, will enter into an agreement with the Department of Energy to lease the land adjacent to Greenville Road where the interim HPCIC and Discovery Center are located. LLNS will enter into a facility lease agreement to occupy the facility over a lease period consistent with mission needs.

LLNL envisions a modern, environmentally friendly, energy-efficient building of approximately 100,000 square feet able to house about 350-400 people, with expanded space for educational and collaborative activities. The building would be a cost-effective design that fosters collaboration with industrial, academic and governmental partners.

The Laboratory will host an industry forum in early November for the parties interested in partnering with the Laboratory. Once a partner has been selected and the detailed proposal developed, another round of federal approvals will be required before construction can begin.

Modeled after research and development campuses found at other major research industrial parks and other DOE sites, Livermore’s open campus is a joint project of Lawrence Livermore and Sandia national labs.
