Expanding Your Horizons Conference to highlight science and math careers
The popular daylong conference introduces young women in grades 6-12 to a variety of challenging careers and will encourage their interest in mathematics and science. More than 500 participants from Stockton, Lodi, Manteca, Tracy and Ripon, are expected to attend, as well as many from Stanislaus County including Modesto and Ceres.
Since its inception, thousands of young San Joaquin County women have participated in this annual event. Many past attendees have gone on to exciting careers in math, science and engineering and now return to volunteer their time to help motivate others.
This year, participants will attend three hands-on workshops and interact with scientists and engineers who often have an impact on the choices these students make about their future. During the workshops, participants will explore topics such as: "Talking at the Speed of Light; computer animation"; "Electricity: The Shocking Truth"; and "From Laser Physics to iPhone Engineering." Keynote speaker, Louise Stark, associate dean and graduate coordinator for the School of Engineering and Computer Science at the University of the Pacific, will share her background and motivation for her career.
Lawrence Livermore National Security, LLC, Sandia National Laboratories, and the University of the Pacific School of Engineering co-sponsor the EYH conference.
The conference hours are 8:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, go to the Website or see the brochure.
