LIVERMORE, Calif. — Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Director George Miller has announced the selection of Richard Robinson as the Laboratory’s new Chief Information Officer (CIO), effective immediately.

As LLNL’s CIO, Robinson will be responsible for the leadership, management and financial oversight of all enterprise Information Technology (IT) activities, including unclassified networks and telecommunications, desktop lifecycle, enterprise applications, cyber security, and data center operations.

Robinson has extensive leadership experience in the management of diverse information technology and cyber-security programs in complex environments.

Robinson succeeds Dona Crawford, LLNL’s associate director for Computation who served in a dual capacity as the acting CIO. Crawford had been asked by LLNL senior management in January 2009 to take the CIO position on an interim basis because of her in-depth knowledge of the laboratory’s computational and cyber infrastructure and management experience.

During the 18 months she held the dual position, Crawford and her leadership team led the effort to take an integrated look at the lab’s cyber infrastructure, develop a plan for the future and define a set of transparent processes for the operation of the CIO program, which Robinson will now lead.

“We look forward to Richard’s leadership in building on the foundation Dona and her team established and enhancing LLNL’s reputation as a national leader in an era of rapidly evolving cyber security threats,” Miller said. “Richard has the experience and leadership skills to bring industry best practices to the creation of the secure state-of-the-art IT environment the Laboratory requires to fulfill its national security mission for the country.”

Robinson has held the position of the chief operations officer and director of IT Enterprise Operations in the Department of Technology for the City and County of San Francisco for the past four and a half years. In this position, his responsibilities included the day-to-day management of the Operations & Infrastructure Division of the Department that includes: Data Center Operations, Network Engineering, Systems Engineering, Security, Telecommunications and Enterprise Applications.

Robinson also served as the chair for the City of San Francisco’s Architecture & Standards Subcommittee for the Committee on Information Technology (COIT).

“I’m honored to have been selected as CIO for Lawrence Livermore, a national lab with a global reputation for science and technology innovation,” Robinson said. “I look forward to working with LLNL’s world-class team to apply that spirit of innovation to the creation of a cyber infrastructure that will serve research programs and laboratory business operations well into the future.”

Robinson played a critical role in several key city projects that included Email Consolidation, City Data Center Relocation & Virtualization and Data Center Consolidation for San Francisco Government, development of Private Cloud Environments for Government Computing, and Security and Standards development.

Robinson has also held management positions at The Institute for Manufacturing and Automations Research, Stanislaus County California, Sun America, and Andersen Consulting (now Accenture). He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering from California Polytechnic - San Luis Obispo.
