LLNL’s Saturday science lectures return to Tracy

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) will bring its popular lecture series, “Science on Saturday,” to Tracy for a third year on Nov. 7 and 14. Each of the free, one-hour presentations will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Grand Theatre at 715 Central Ave. in Tracy.

The series of lectures and demonstrations highlighting current research conducted at LLNL is targeted at middle and high school students and teachers. Each lecture is developed through a collaboration of a Lab scientist and a science teacher to create a presentation in the form of a science lesson.

The talks include:

  • Nov. 7 — “Order From Chaos: The Birth of the Solar System,” by John Bradley of LLNL and Dean Reese, teacher, Tracy High School. This talk will explain what triggers star formation in clouds, circumstellar disks, planet formation within the disks, and early life on earth.

  • Nov. 14 — “Aerogels: The Materials Science of Empty Space,” by Alex Gash of LLNL and Ellen Rocco, teacher. This lecture will discuss the structure, properties and advanced applications of aerogels. And, the presenters may even make some during the talk.

The talks are aligned with the California Science Standards and are sponsored by LLNL’s Science Education Program. Seating is first-come, first-served. No pre-registration is required. For more information about Science on Saturday, go to the Web at or contact Richard Farnsworth at (925) 422-5059.
