Tracy and West High School seniors receive Edward Teller science scholarships

Two Tracy high school students have won the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s prestigious Edward Teller Science Scholarship.

Meera Punjiya of Tracy High School and Peter Wardell of West High School are this year’s recipients; this is the second year the award has been presented to Tracy students.

Instituted in 2004 in honor of the late Dr. Teller, renowned physicist and Lab co-founder, the awards are given by the Laboratory to graduating seniors selected by the district who excel in science studies. Each student will receive a $1,500 scholarship toward his or her college education.

Punjiya, a dedicated student in science as well as science-related activities, will attend Harvey Mudd College. She has participated all four years as a member of Tracy High’s Science Olympiad team and helped with Science Night, an evening event for elementary school students. On National DNA Day she partnered with LLNL scientists to teach fifth-grade students about DNA.

Wardell will attend UCLA to study science or engineering. He is an outstanding student who has repeatedly demonstrated an interest in science. He has excelled in classes like Advanced Placement Physics and Chemistry Honors and will graduate with honors from The Tracy Unified School District’s Space and Engineering Academy (SEA).

In addition, he has participated in a variety of science-related activities including Project Green Light, University of the Pacific’s Engineering Day, Great America Physics Day and the SEA Senior Project.

The awards were presented to the students by Laboratory managers at each of their high school’s awards ceremonies in Tracy.
