New Lab Safeguards and Security Department Head

LIVERMORE, Calif. - Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Safeguards & Security Organization Director Dave Leary announced the selection of Russell G. Miller as Department Head for Safeguards and Security, effective immediately. Leary noted that he is "…looking to Russ to provide the leadership, oversight, and direction to create cost-effective security and ensure protection of personnel, information, property, and nuclear materials here at the Laboratory."

" I've been in this business for some time, and this is an excellent organization that we have here at Livermore," Miller said. "I hope to keep the spotlight shining—for all the right reasons—on what we do for the Laboratory," he emphasized.

Joining the department in December 2001 as deputy department head, Miller provided leadership, oversight and direction with a focus on the Protective Force, and Information & Personnel Security Divisions. He has been acting department head since retirement in July 2003 of his predecessor, Joe Krueger.

Earlier, Miller served 24 years with the United States Secret Service. Among his assignments, he had been responsible for the physical security and development of security technology at the White House complex. He retired as Special Agent in Charge of the San Francisco Field Office.

Immediately before coming to the Lab Miller served six years as the director of Corporate Services at E & J Gallo Corporation. There he managed uniformed protective forces, and oversaw access-control and central-station monitoring, computer security, investigations, and pre-employment screening.

During a career spanning three decades, Miller has worked with various government agencies on policy development and funding strategies, and served as a liaison with law enforcement. He holds a bachelor's degree in Business Administration/Marketing from California State University at Chico.

" Russ' experience and insight into issues facing the department, and his ability to work cross-functionally while accomplishing his goals will serve him well in this new position. I look forward to working with Russ on the security challenges that face the Laboratory, now and in the years to come," Leary said.
