Lawrence Livermore Children's Center Gains Accreditation

The Lawrence Livermore Employee Service's Association (LLESA) Children's Center has earned accreditation by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the nation's leading organization of early childhood professionals.

Located approximately one mile from the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), the Children's Center was established in 1986 and is managed by LLESA with input from a parent advisory council. The Children's Center provides year-round child development services for infants, toddlers, preschool, and elementary school-age children of LLNL, Department of Energy (DOE), Sandia Labs, and LLNL Contract employees. The center currently accommodates 180 children, with a staff of 37.

"We're proud to be accredited by NAEYC, and recognized for our commitment to reaching the highest professional standards," said Laura Reno, director of the Children's Center for the past 17 years.

The accreditation process is a comprehensive, voluntary process of internal self-study combined with an external professional validation process. The accreditation is valid for three years.

Reno added, "The accreditation process was a joint effort of the Children's Center staff and parents and demonstrates the value of professional commitment."

NAEYC administers the largest and most widely recognized accreditation system for all types of early childhood schools and childcare centers and is the nation's largest organization of early childhood educators.
