Livermore Lab Broadens Its Public Tour Program

LIVERMORE, Calif — In conjunction with its 50th anniversary, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is expanding its public tour program to offer more tours each month, as well as more stops along the way.

The all-new, retooled community tours will include:

• A peek inside the Biology & Biotechnology Program to find out more about biology labs and such state-of-the-art equipment as a glucose monitor or the Hand-held Analytic Nucleic Acid Analyzer.

• A visit to the National Atmospheric Release Center to learn how the center and its researchers offer atmospheric monitoring around the world.

• A walk through the building that houses one of the world’s fastest supercomputers, a massive system of processors capable of performing 12 trillion calculations per second.

The two-hour tour will be offered twice weekly at 10 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning in May. Visitors must register in advance. Special tours can also be arranged for groups of eight or more people with two weeks’ advance notice.

Tour program coordinator Linda Lucchetti said the new tours are intended to offer a glimpse inside the Laboratory’s gates and demystify the work that is done in the national interest.

"The tours will offer the public a snapshot of the Laboratory," she said. "We hope to share information about the many noteworthy scientific achievements that impact our nation and our daily lives. We hope visitors will experience a sense of awe as well as pride about the work being done here."
