“Angel Island — Ellis Island Of The West”


WHO: Lydia Lum, staff writer for several Texas newspapers, freelance journalist and photographer.

WHAT: Will deliver a talk entitled “Angel Island — The Ellis Island of the West: Immigrant Journeys of Chinese-Americans.” Lum has interviewed and photographed people about the hardships, discrimination and interrogations at Angel Island in San Francisco Bay, the country's West Coast immigration depot between 1910 and 1940. Interest in her own Asian heritage drove Lum to seek out people who passed through Angel Island. Lum's appearance is part of the Laboratory's Diversity Speaker Series.
