Memorial Day observance set for Tuesday

A Memorial Day observance will take place at noon, Tuesday, May 27, at the Veterans Memorial Rose Garden near Lake Haussmann and Bldg. 551.

A rosebush will be dedicated by Dave Leary, acting director of the Security Organization and member of the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory Armed Forces Veterans Association (LLLAFVA). Speakers will include John Doesburg, principal associate director for Global Security and George Sakaldasis, assistant director for Military Affairs in the Lab’s National Security Office. All employees are invited to attend to honor those who have made sacrifices to secure our freedoms.

The observance is sponsored by the LLLAFVA and the Director’s Office, Strategic Diversity Programs.

Congressman Rush Holt comes to the Lab for briefings

Congressman Rush Holt of New Jersey, chairman of the House Select Intelligence Oversight Panel of the House Committee on Appropriations, visited the Lab Saturday for briefings and tours.

Hosted by Director George Miller, Holt listened to briefings on the support the Lab lends to the intelligence community as well as nonproliferation efforts. Holt also toured the National Ignition Facility and had a one-on-one lunch with Miller.

Holt serves on the Committee on Education and Labor, the Committee on Natural Resources and the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. Holt is the only scientist and only member from the New Jersey delegation to sit on the Intelligence Committee. Created at the start of the 110th Congress in January 2007, the Select Intelligence Oversight Panel is working to strengthen oversight of the intelligence community by ensuring that policymakers receive accurate assessments, civil liberties are safeguarded and the intelligence community is protecting Americans.

Holt earned his bachelor’s degree in physics from Carleton College in Minnesota and completed his master’s and Ph.D. at NYU. He has held positions as a teacher, congressional science fellow and arms control expert at the U.S. State Department where he monitored the nuclear programs of countries such as Iraq, Iran, North Korea and the former Soviet Union.

Annual Site 300 burn to begin this coming week

The Laboratory is scheduled to begin its annual controlled burn at Site 300 following the Memorial Day weekend. This year, the firefighting services will be performed by the Alameda County Fire Department. The controlled burn will involve careful burning along the fence line and parts of the Site 300 interior area under controlled conditions to help prevent wildfires from spreading to or from the site.

The burn schedule is dependent on appropriate weather conditions, which are confirmed by air pollution control district meteorologists on the day of a planned burn. Site 300 neighbors and area agencies identified in the controlled burn plan will be notified by telephone when a burn is to take place.

The Site 300 annual controlled burn plan can be found in documents recently placed in the LLNL Environmental Repositories at the Tracy Public Library, located at 20 East Eaton Ave. in Tracy, and the LLNL Discovery Center, located at East Gate Drive off Greenville Road in Livermore. These documents are the "Prescribed Burning Smoke Management Plan" at the Laboratory's Site 300 and the "Site 300 Explosive Test Facility Prescribed Burn/Smoke Management Plan." These documents also are posted on the LLNL Website .

If you have any questions about this year's controlled burn, or if you would like to receive paper copies of these documents, contact wilson101 [at] llnl.gov ( Scott Wilson ) in the LLNL Public Affairs Office, 925-423-3125.
