Lab wellness program fit for an award

The Laboratory has received a 2008 Fit Business Silver Award from the California Task Force on Youth and Workplace Wellness. The Fit Business awards recognize fit and healthy workplaces, including an organization’s commitment to ensuring that employees receive access to workplace wellness programs. The awards encourage California employers to be models of healthy eating and physical activity.

Workplace wellness programs at the Laboratory include:

  • The Healthy Heart Program, which helps individuals to lower their risk for heart disease, diabetes and stroke through assessment, counseling and environmental health initiatives.
  • Fit for Business, a division of the Lawrence Livermore Employee Services Association (LLESA) that provides exercise and activity options for the Laboratory population.
  • Work-Life Center, which offers living well seminars and brings to together wellness services at LLNL for dialogue and coordination.

State Sen. Tom Torlakson and State Assemblyman Lloyd Levine presented the award to Phil Arzino, the Lab’s health promotion manager, at a ceremony in Santa Clara last month to commend those California businesses committed to improving worker health and decreasing obesity-related illnesses.

"Healthy workplace programs are given serious attention in most large corporations today," Arzino said. "Providing opportunities for employees to improve their physical and mental health helps to retain a happier, more productive workforce and reduces both employee and employer health costs."
