Employer partnership with Army Reserve

The Laboratory, along with three Bay Area cities, four companies and a community college, has signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the U.S. Army Reserve’s, Northern California Employer Partnership Initiative.  Bill Bruner, director of Government and External Relations, represented LLNL at the signing ceremony Tuesday, at Camp Parks in Dublin, Calif.

The Employer Partnership Initiative was launched by the U. S. Army Reserve in April 2008 to formalize the relationship between the Army Reserve and the private sector, both of whom share the common goals of strengthening the community, supporting soldiers and families, and maintaining a strong economy. Currently, there are 300 partners across the country.

The program is equally beneficial to communities, corporations and companies that participate, as well as soldiers in the Army Reserve, explained Richard (Phil) Stage, program support manager for the Employer Partnership Initiative.

Partnering employers such as LLNL are given assured access to skilled and qualified soldiers serving in various capacities.  Soldiers benefit from increased job opportunities and greater stability, resulting in continuity in their civilian careers and lives.

In welcoming the participants to the ceremony, Maj. Gen. Mari Eder, deputy chief, Army Reserve, remarked "what a great community we have here this morning." She went on to explain how the partnership is about "building a network of support for our soldiers."  She also stressed the need to steer young people towards careers in science, technology, engineering and math.

Representatives who joined LLNL in signing the agreement included:  James D. Davis, mayor of Antioch; Marj Leider, Livermore City Council member; Hermnio Sunga, mayor of Vallejo, John Simon, PG&E; John Swenson, DeAnza College; Danyelle Gibson Grant, Fremont Bank; and Chris Seymour, Westmed Ambulance.  Prudential Insurance Company, based in New Jersey, was not represented.

In addition, representatives from the offices of both Congresswoman Ellen Tauscher and Congressman Jerry McNerney attended the ceremony.
