Lawrence Livermore National Security, LLC recipients of $100,000 Community Gift Program 2010

Lawrence Livermore National Security, LLC (LLNS), the contract manager for Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, has announced the recipients for the 2010 LLNS Community Gift Program. These gifts, totaling $100,000, reflect LLNS' commitment to local communities.

LLNS received 71 applications totaling nearly $799,000 in requests. Twenty-three applications totaling $100,000 were selected for awards through a committee review process. The majority of these awards serve children in the Tri-Valley and San Joaquin County, with a focus on science and math education and cultural arts.

"We thank all of the agencies for the valuable services and important contributions they provide in our Tri-Valley and Central Valley communities, It's through their hard work and persistent effort that the entire region benefits," said George Miller, LLNS president and LLNL director.

"LLNS is committed to being a good neighbor. Through these gifts to education and arts, LLNS is privileged to give back to the community and help the agencies with the work they do."

Following are this year's LLNS Corporate Gift Program award recipients, with a brief description of their programs and goals:

  • Dublin Unified School District, Dublin High School, Engineering Academy began its academy this fall to inspire and prepare students for higher education and careers in engineering.
  • Dublin Unified School District, Wells Middle School is teaching reading fluency, accuracy and comprehension to at-risk students using the Barton reading program.
  • Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District, Granada High School's Biotechnology Pathway was started in 2007 to inspire and prepare students for higher education and careers in biotechnology-related fields.
  • Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District, Livermore High School's "Celebrate Mathematics" is a student-inspired program to improve math education for students at all levels.
  • Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District, Teaching Opportunities for Partners in Science (TOPS) brings together Livermore teachers and retired science and engineering professionals, many from LLNL, to enhance science learning for both teachers and students.
  • Pleasanton Unified School District will use its LLNS gift in its elementary schools to purchase lab materials and support science teacher training.
  • Pleasanton Unified School District, Horizon School provides Tri-Valley teen parents with a safe, nurturing school environment in which to complete their high school education.
  • Las Positas College Foundation, Las Positas College will use its gift to help support an Undergraduate Science Research Poster Session to present undergraduate science students' work to the community.
  • Jefferson School District, Special Education Department will use its gift tor supplement its curriculum in mathematics, reading and writing.
  • Tracy Unified School District, Merrill F. West High School, Space and Engineering Academy's Robotic Club will use its gift to reach out to other schools by mentoring students and purchasing equipment for new robotics team students.
  • San Joaquin County Office of Education, National Science Olympiad will use its gift to support the Science Olympiad through the purchase of science equipment and materials.
  • Wiesner Memorial Senior Fund provides emergency grants to needy seniors in the Tri-Valley Area.
  • Give Every Child a Chance of Tracy supports community volunteers who mentor and tutor struggling students to help them improve academically.
  • BasicNecessities.org's Nosotras en Control 2010-2011 program for middle school and high school-aged Latina girls focuses on developing self-esteem, making positive choices, creating an educational plan and setting learning goals.
  • Girl Scouts of Northern California will use its gift to build girls' confidence in technology through a robotics special interest group.
  • Alameda County Sheriff's Office of Homeland Security Services' Dive Time is an all-volunteer group of men and women who donate their time to perform underwater search and recovery, and to educate the community about water safety.
  • Livermore-Amador Valley Symphony will use its gift to develop an appropriate curriculum for musical education programs in local elementary and middle schools.
  • Shepherd's Gate provides shelter and resources to battered and homeless women and children.
  • Agape Villages Foster Family Agency's Agape Enrichment Program will use its gift to enhance the quality of life for abused and neglected children through enrichment programs such as music, art, dance and sports.
  • Dublin Partners in Education will use its gift to support the Dublin Unified School District in funding the skills development and strategies needed by high school teachers through the Alameda County Office Mathematics Development Center.
  • Livermore Performing Arts Center's "Artists in the Schools" education program provides funding for performances, master classes and master teacher opportunities that benefit students in the Livermore and Pleasanton school districts through performances by professional artists at the Bankhead Theater in Livermore.
  • Diablo Valley Veterans Foundation, East Bay Stand Down works to break the cycle of homelessness and despair that afflicts many military veterans by providing services such as health care and counseling.
  • Livermore Public Library's "Popular Science Career Fields for Teens" will provide career information and resources to assist teens in identifying the pathways and skills needed to reach their career goals.
