Lawrence Livermore National Security announces recipients of annual Community Gift Program

Lawrence Livermore National Security, LLC (LLNS), the contract manager for Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), has announced the recipients for the 2020 LLNS Community Gift Program. These gifts, totaling $150,000, reflect LLNS' commitment to local communities.

LLNS received applications totaling more than $260,000 in requests. Thirty applications were selected for awards totaling $150,000 through a committee review process. Many of these awards serve children in the Tri-Valley area as well as Contra Costa, San Francisco and San Joaquin counties, with a focus on literacy, science, technology, engineering and math education and cultural arts. Other recipients focus their charitable efforts toward children, families, senior citizens and individuals in need of assistance.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, checks will be mailed to recipients in lieu of an in-person reception. The following organizations received awards:

  • The American Indian Child Resource Center: STEM education intensive for young urban Native women.
  • ARM of Care: Creative arts/STEAM-based trauma therapy for abused children.
  • The Assistance League of Amador Valley: Operation School Bell provides books through the “Books of My Own” program.
  • Bay Area LEEDS: Contra Costa Science and Engineering fair.
  • Bay Area Rescue Mission: Serves the needs of the homeless.
  • California High School: Incorporates the “maker mentality” within the student body through their maker space and project classrooms.
  • Children Rising: Early elementary online education, interventional math tutoring for improving STEM success.
  • Christensen Middle School: Teaching science in Livermore through long-distance learning during a pandemic.
  • Discovery Bay Odyssey of the Mind: STEM-based educational opportunities for students from all backgrounds to learn about robotics, physics and engineering in a fun environment.
  • Dublin Partners in Education: Real-world context in development of needed multidisciplinary integrated learning experiences for children.
  • Explorer Post #987: System Overload Robotics, promotes learning of STEAM to students of the Tri-Valley area.
  • Girl Scouts of Northern California: Discover together after-school STEM and environmental enrichment program for K-8th grade girls.
  • Jose M. Hernandez Reaching for the Stars Foundation: 2021 Science Blast.
  • Livermore High School: GravitechX FIRST robotics competition team.
  • Livermore High School Metal Shop Safety Enhancement: Enables students to receive exposure to basic manufacturing processes in a safe and welcoming environment.
  • Livermore Shakespeare Festival: Science at Play.
  • League of United Latin American Citizens LULAC 2060: Youth Eagles Aviation and Aerospace education in STEM.
  • Pleasanton Partnerships in Education Foundation’s (PPIE): Computer coding, robotics, 3D printing, biotech in the garden, public mural design and more is introduced to more than 2,000 students annually.
  • Quest Science Center: Interactive science experience and education summer camp.
  • Monte Vista High School: Red Tie Robotics team.
  • Sandra J. Wing Healing Therapies Foundation: Healing therapies for cancer patients.
  • Students Rising Above: College and career readiness services for low-income students from Alameda and Contra Costa counties.
  • Tracy Friends of the Library: “Cracking the Code,” STEM for English language learners.
  • Tracy Interfaith Ministries: Provides food security to low-income and homeless families and individuals in Tracy.
  • Tri-Valley Conservancy: Connects youth to nature through technology.
  • Valley Christian Food Pantry: Offers groceries to residents of San Joaquin County that find themselves in need.
  • Wayfinder Family Services (previously named Junior Blind): Provides critical early childhood development services and support to children and their families.
  • West Contra Costa Public Education Fund: Building elementary students’ math understanding with adaptive digital platform for distance learning.
  • Wiesner Memorial Senior Fund: Provides emergency help to seniors in the Tri-Valley.
  • Z-Cares Foundation: Supports youth mental health and awareness in the Tri-Valley.

The $150,000 in support of the Community Gift Program is in addition to the $1 million contribution made by LLNS each year to the LLNL Helping Others More Effectively (HOME) Campaign, LLNL’s annual employee charitable giving program. This year, employees generously donated $2.9 million through HOME and with the LLNS $1 million additional contribution, $3.9 million will be supporting charitable programs and those in need.
