Laboratory hosts state innovation hub leaders

Leaders of the new State of California Innovation Hubs, or iHubs, were in Livermore last week for a visit that included stops at Livermore Laboratory and Sandia Laboratories/CA.  The iHub leaders were joined by representatives from Gov. Schwarzenegger's Office of Economic Development.

The iHubs were instituted this year by Schwarzenegger in an effort to improve the state's national and global competitiveness by stimulating partnerships, economic development and job creation around specific research clusters.  The iHubs will leverage assets such as research parks, technology incubators, universities and federal laboratories to provide an innovation platform for startup companies, economic development organizations, business groups, and venture capitalists.

The City of Livermore is the lead organization for the local iHub, which is entitled Innovation for Green Advanced Transportation Excellence, or i-GATE.  Both LLNL and Sandia Labs/CA are i-GATE partners with the city, as are numerous other regional cities, business organizations and academic institutions.  A primary focus of i-GATE will be "green" transportation, including vehicle engine efficiency, electric vehicles/batteries, alternative fuels, vehicle aerodynamics, transportation systems analysis (modeling and simulation) and related energy fields.

While at LLNL, the iHub visitors toured the National Ignition Facility, met with leaders of the Industrial Partnerships Office, got a closeup look at the Lab's hydrogen car, and visited with Laboratory researchers during an informal poster session in the Terascale Simulation Facility.
