Lab Scientists Testing Instruments, Developing Technologies To Detect Nuclear Materials

What:

What steps can be taken to try to stop terrorists intent on smuggling nuclear materials into the United States? During the past three months, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory researchers have been testing commercial instruments and new technologies that are being used or may be used by various government agencies in the detection of nuclear materials. The work is being conducted at an Intermodal Container Evaluation and Experimental Facility at LLNL. In addition, Laboratory researchers from different scientific disciplines are working together to develop new technologies to better detect nuclear materials.

Who: LLNL nuclear physicists and other researchers.
When:

11 a.m. Thursday, August 15, 2002

Where:

Bldg. 231 High Bay at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

INFO.

Visuals: Using depleted uranium as a radioactive source inside a cargo container, researchers will demonstrate some of the nuclear detection instruments being tested. To simulate how nuclear materials could be hidden, materials such as lumber and scrap metal are placed inside the cargo container.

Press members interested in attending the event need to contact the LLNL Public Affairs Office at (925) 424-4822 to make badging arrangements.

The National Nuclear Security Administration’s Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is managed by the University of California.

Laboratory news releases and photos are also available electronically on the World Wide Web of the Internet at URL http://www.llnl.gov/PAO and on UC Newswire.
