Jens Mahler named acting Engineering AD

Director Bruce Tarter has named Jens Mahler as acting associate director for Engineering, to hold the position being vacated by Associate Director Spiros Dimolitsas.

"Jens will do an excellent job as acting AD," Dimolitsas said. "He is a seasoned manager who is widely respected by the programs and knows Engineering in depth."

Mahler will become acting AD on Nov. 12 when Dimolitsas begins his new position at Georgetown University. A selection committee for the permanent AD for Engineering, headed by Associate Director for Computation Dona Crawford and Associate Director for NIF George Miller, began meeting this morning. Other members include Mahler, NIF’s Gina Bonanno; Engineering’s Diane Chinn, Rick Corriea, Dave McCallen, Derek Wapman and Jeff illiams; PAT’s Karl Bibber, Chemistry’s Tomas Diaz de la Rubia; NAI’s Steve Cochran; DNT’s Dave Conrad; and Administration’s Tommy Smith, Karena McKinley and Lynette Willard.

Mahler has served as the Deputy Associate Director for Mechanical Engineering since January 1993. He has been part of Engineering since joining the Lab in August 1969. He holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley. A long-time project and division manager, Mahler has specialized in areas of design, analysis, fabrication, and fielding of a wide variety of mechanical systems. As head of ME, he is responsible for approximately 1200 engineers, technical and administrative staff supporting virtually all Lab programs.

"My job will be to keep Engineering focused on meeting our mission and moving forward," Mahler said.
