INFECTIOUS DISEASES EXPERT EXAMINES GLOBAL EPIDEMICS


LIVERMORE, Calif. - Eva Harris, assistant professor in UCBerkeley's School of Public Health, will discuss emerging infectiousdiseases, such as dengue fever and tuberculosis, at LawrenceLivermore National Laboratory's next "Science 2000" lecture onThursday, Jan. 27.

Harris' talk, "A Global Approach to Infectious Diseases," will beheld at 7:30 p.m. at the Livermore High School Performing ArtsTheater, 600 Maple St., Livermore. It is free and open to thepublic.

This is the third in a series of evening talks that will beoffered through March. All of the talks are geared toward the generalpublic.

Despite great medical strides in recent decades, disease killsmillions worldwide every year. Harris, who has worked in theInfectious Diseases Unit of UC Berkeley's School of Public Healthsince 1998 and in various Latin American countries over the lasttwelve years, will talk about why this pattern continues and how wecan use collaborative technology transfer programs to offerdeveloping nations the tools they need to more effectivelycharacterize, understand, and prevent disease transmission. Inaddition to her current position, Harris has also been an assistantadjunct professor of molecular pathogenesis at UC San Francisco since1997 and director of the Applied Molecular biology/AppropriateTechnology Transfer Program at UC San Francisco since 1993.

Among her awards and honors, Harris won a MacArthur Fellowship in1997 and is a visiting professor in La Paz, Bolivia and Acapulco,Mexico. She earned her bachelor's degree in biochemical sciences atHarvard and her Ph.D. in molecular and cell biology at UCBerkeley.
