The Department of Energy (DOE) today launched the spring 2022 solicitation for the High Performance Computing for Energy Innovation (HPC4EI) initiative, seeking proposals from industry that address key energy and decarbonization-related challenges in domestic manufacturing.

The latest HPC4EI funding opportunity is sponsored by the HPC4Manufacturing (HPC4Mfg) Program, one of the pillars of HPC4EI. The program is supported primarily by DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy’s Advanced Manufacturing Office. Managed by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, HPC4Mfg is designed to improve manufacturing processes, address products’ lifecycle energy consumption and increase the efficiency of energy conversion and storage technologies.

Selected projects will be awarded up to $300,000 to support compute cycles and high-performance computing (HPC) work performed by the national laboratories. Applicants are encouraged to partner with a diverse range of universities, community colleges and non-profit organizations, especially those located in disadvantaged communities, to ensure the equitable use and benefits of HPC resources and technologies.

Industry partners will be required to contribute at least 20 percent of the total project funding. Follow-on projects to previously awarded projects that have demonstrated success in the industrial setting will also be considered.

To date, HPC4EI has funded $42 million for 140 public/private partnerships.

Informational webinars for the new funding round will be held on May 10 and May 18. The deadline for concept papers is June 7 at 5 p.m. PDT.
