HPC for Energy Innovation issues new solicitation for clean energy projects

The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) High Performance Computing for Energy Innovation (HPC4EI) initiative, managed by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, is seeking proposals for projects that can leverage DOE supercomputing to advance clean energy technologies.

The fall 2021 solicitation targets industry partners for collaborations with DOE national laboratories that would address key manufacturing challenges, reduce carbon emissions and accelerate clean energy research to help the nation meet the Biden-Harris Administration’s goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

HPC4EI is intended to provide industry with access to DOE supercomputing resources and expertise to improve manufacturing processes, address energy consumption and increase efficiency of energy conversion and storage technologies.

The solicitation includes two pillars of the HPC4EI initiative — the High Performance Computing for Manufacturing (HPC4Mfg) and High Performance Computing for Materials (HPC4Mtls) programs. HPC4Mfg is sponsored primarily by DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy’s Advanced Manufacturing Office. DOE’s Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management is the primary sponsor of HPC4Mtls. 

To date, DOE has awarded nearly $40 million for 132 collaborative projects under the initiative. Projects selected under the latest solicitation will receive up to $300,000 for computing cycles and work performed by DOE national laboratories, universities and non-profit partners. Industry partners must contribute at least 20 percent of the total project funding.

Funding eligibility is open to all DOE national laboratories and companies that manufacture products or operate systems in the United States for commercial applications, as well as the organizations that support them. HPC4EI encourages applicants to partner with a diverse range of universities, community colleges and non-profit organizations, especially those located in disadvantaged communities. The deadline to submit concept papers is Jan. 7, 2022.
