Grass fire extinguished at Site 300

CAL FIRE and Alameda County firefighters have extinguished a grass fire at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s Site 300. The approximately 168-acre fire began at 8:19 p.m. Friday and was contained by 9:51 p.m. Fire crews were released at 1:47 a.m. Saturday.

An aluminized mylar party balloon that landed between two wires of an overhead 12 kilovolt line caused a short circuit and sparked the fire, which occurred near the central area of Site 300. No structures were damaged and no injuries were reported.

Site 300 is the LLNL’s experimental test site, located about 17 miles southeast of the Lab’s main site.
