More than 14,000 employees, family and guests attended the Laboratory's Family Days Open House Saturday and Sunday. The total number of visitors was 14,435 — 8,615 on Saturday and 5,820 on Sunday. The National Ignition Facility (NIF) was one of the popular attractions with visitors waiting up to 90 minutes to tour the laser facility.

A popular feature of the two-day event, particularly with children, was the 20 trolleys used to ferry visitors around the site. More than 600 employee volunteers, including some from the NNSA Laboratory Site Office, helped manage every aspect of the open house from displays, events and tours to maintaining water supplies, registering visitors and traffic control.
