Christine Orme, a staff scientist in the Physical and Life Science Directorate, has been elected to the board of the Materials Research Society (MRS), an organization of materials researchers from academia, industry and government. The society promotes communication for the advancement of interdisciplinary materials research.

"In its 35-year history, MRS has developed a cohesive community composed of the world's most highly respected experts in materials research," Orme said.

"Like many other professional organizations, the MRS is a place for collaboration, recruiting and learning about many different disciplines. It is a place where researchers can grow," she added.

Orme knows this first hand. Her election to the board is another valuable tie with the MRS acquired throughout her career.

Orme joined the MRS as a graduate student, giving one of her first invited talks at an MRS meeting. In addition, it was at an MRS meeting where she met Jim De Yoreo (then at LLNL), who interviewed and later recruited her for a position at LLNL. "The society has helped me network and to develop as a scientist," she said.

More recently, Orme has served as a conference co-chair, symposium organizer, and volume organizer, editing material for the monthly MRS Bulletin .

As a new board member, Orme hopes to contribute to nominations and technical programming and be involved in strategic planning for the society. She would like to see the society strengthen its focus on the world's energy needs, providing guidance on materials for energy.

Orme studied physics at the University of Michigan, receiving her Ph.D. in 1995 in the area of surface evolution during vapor deposition. She joined the Lab in 1996 and has served as a project leader, group leader and institute director.

Orme is the recipient of a Science and Technology Award from LLNL (2001), an Office of Science Early Career Scientist and Engineer Award (2002) and a Presidential Early Career Award in Science and Engineering (2002) for her work in biomineralization.
