Global Security's David Price has been appointed to a two-year term as a member of the board of directors for the Institute of Hazardous Materials Management (IHMM).

A senior consequence analyst in Z Division, Price was recently named to IHMM's 10-member board of directors. He attended his first board meeting on March 14-15 in Washington, D.C.

"While one of the main aims of the organization is to focus on worker safety, it also encompasses the management of entire sites with large inventories of hazardous materials," Price said.

As a member of the IHMM's board of directors, Price will be involved in establishing policy, as well as providing guidance and oversight at the top levels of the institute's credential programs.

Price joined the professional organization in 2002 when he secured a certified hazardous material manager (CHMM) credential, which currently requires four years of experience in the field, a four-year degree and passage of an examination.

Since 2007, Price has been a member of the CHMM Exam Committee, helping to write the certification exams and associated job task analyses.

In addition to its CHMM credential, the IHMM also offers a certified hazardous materials practitioner credential, which requires three years of experience in the field, a two-year degree and passage of an examination. Both credentials include transportation, operations, storage, disposal and environmental clean-up efforts.

IHMM is finalizing a new certification -- certified dangerous goods professional, for dealing with the transportation and security of hazardous materials/dangerous goods internationally.

Founded in 1984, the IHMM is a not-for-profit organization that seeks to protect the environment and the public's health, safety and security through its credential programs recognizing professionals for excellence in the management of hazardous materials.

About 8,000 homeland security, environmental protection, engineering, health sciences and transportation professionals currently hold active certifications. The credential holders are usually people who work in the United States or are U.S. workers overseas. However, the IHMM is now expanding their certifications to other nations, such as India and Saudi Arabia, and last year hosted two delegations from China.

The IHMM credential programs are accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the Council of Engineering and Scientific Specialty Boards.
