Isom Harrison, the Lab's Library director, has received the 2012 Lifetime Service award from the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE) for his work as the organization's Western region chair.

The award is bestowed by the NOBCChE Board of Directors on individuals whose contributions have been exemplary and served to enhance the day-to-day functioning of NOBCChE consistently over a long period of time.

Harrison, the Lab's Library director since 1991, has a master's degree in organic chemistry and has been active in NOBCChE for the past 20 years serving at the regional level with a focus on community outreach and education.

"It is very gratifying to be recognized for the work you do, especially when the recognition is coming from your peers, most of whom are just as deserving," Harrison said.

His most rewarding work, he says, has been advocating the importance of science to underrepresented middle and high school students in the African American and Hispanic sectors in his hometown of Stockton, as well as in Oakland.

Harrison believes young people should be ready to tackle our country's future challenges, and to do that, they will need to be proficient in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

NOBCChE is committed to providing opportunities for broadening the pipeline to STEM careers.

NOBCChE's mission is to develop an eminent cadre of people of color in STEM disciplines.

"My goal in NOBCChE is to make sure the eminent cadre is realized," Harrison added.
