Job Description

We have an opening for a Software Engineer to support various advanced manufacturing projects. You will work within a team of engineers, scientists and technicians to develop software solutions to enhance and improve additive manufacturing processes and integrate existing tools for general use with robust user interfaces for a more efficient workflow. Your work will directly impact the daily operations of a team dedicated to critical Laboratory missions. This position is in the Materials Engineering Division (MED).

In this role you will

  • Collaborate with engineers and researchers to develop software tools for interfacing with CNC machines (customized for additive manufacturing), generating G-Code for robotic stage manipulation, and data mining and visualization.
  • Develop a software workflow integrating part design, CNC machine manipulation, data collection, and database records.
  • Translate and optimize legacy codes.
  • Bring systematic and statistical approaches to the challenges of product development and certification for practical use in LLNL programs.
  • Develop analysis and optimization methods to improve manufacturing processes and products.
  • Carry out development of data analysis algorithms to address program and sponsor data sciences requirements.
  • Document and present advancements to the team and our external collaborators.
  • Exercise good coding practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional Duties at the SES.2 Level

  • Integrate and consolidate legacy code and apps into a single codebase.
  • Design and develop a new software infrastructure to address multi-user needs.


  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, physics, mathematics, or related field.
  • Software product development experience using object-oriented languages (Python, Matlab, and C++/C) in Linux and Windows environments, and standard code repositories/version control systems.
  • Fundamental knowledge of data schema design and performance analysis and tuning in NoSQL (e.g., MongoDB).
  • Ability to work independently, as well as in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Sufficient written and verbal communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills, and abilities working effectively with high level technical, engineering, and scientific staff.

Additional Qualifications at the SES.2 Level

  • Comprehensive knowledge of data schema design and performance analysis and tuning in NoSQL (e.g., MongoDB).
  • Experience developing software design documents.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience with software certification and qualification.
  • Prior experience with working in a laboratory, machine shop, or field environment.
  • Experience with Aerotech or other multi-stage machine software APIs.
  • GitHub presence with personal examples or open source code contributions desired.
