Job Description

We have multiple openings within the Target Area Science & Engineering (TASE) organization for Field Engineers. These roles contribute to the fielding and operation of diagnostic systems at the National Ignition Facility (NIF). The National Ignition Facility is home to the world’s most powerful and energetic laser.  You will be involved in design, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of various systems used to acquire data on NIF experiments. These positions are in the Laser Systems Engineering & Operations (LSEO) Division, within the Engineering Directorate.

These positions will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role, you will

  • Provide operational engineering services for diagnostic and positioning systems of limited complexity.
  • Perform commissioning and troubleshooting of diagnostics, system cabling, and rack equipment.
  • Participate in the conceptual design of diagnostics, utility, safety interlock, and positioning systems.
  • Apply standard technical and/or theories, concepts, and techniques to a wide variety of hardware design and analysis projects.
  • Generate engineering solutions to problems of limited complexity that require the evaluation of readily identifiable factors while working under general direction.
  • Prepare engineering and operations documentation including commissioning test plans, acceptance procedures, and operations procedures.
  • Interface with operations personnel, system engineers, system managers, and immediate supervisor to complete various projects.
  • Work independently, under general direction, as well as a part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the SES.2 level

  • Provide engineering solutions to resolve moderately complex to complex technical and programmatic issues.
  • Perform independent technical analysis to provide solutions for a diverse range of moderately complex to complex issues under limited direction.
  • Select methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria to obtain results based on analysis of multiple, largely identifiable factors.

Qualifications

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electronics/Electrical Engineering or related discipline or the equivalent combination of education and previous related experience.
  • Fundamental knowledge in the design, fabrication, installation, testing, and operation of instrumentation systems of limited complexity.
  • Fundamental knowledge of electronics test equipment including oscilloscopes, digital multi-meters, time-domain reflectometers, network analyzers, and optical power meters.
  • Fundamental knowledge of sensor integration, calibration, and signal analysis techniques as well as microcontrollers, embedded systems, device electronics, high voltage pulsed electronics, RF techniques and practices.
  • Familiarity with commercially available imaging diagnostic systems including CCD and CMOS camera systems.
  • Knowledgeable of printed circuit board (PCB) layout or design software tools.
  • Familiarity with fiber optic cables and troubleshooting techniques as well as coaxial cabling and troubleshooting techniques.
  • Ability to use independent judgment to solve problems, under general direction, while adhering to well defined practices and procedures.
  • Sufficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information.

Additional qualifications at the SES.2 level

  • Broad experience and proficiency identifying, defining, analyzing, and solving moderately complex to complex multi-disciplinary problems in a timely, cost-effective manner while working under limited direction.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of and broad experience in engineering electronics design, operation, or testing processes and ability to meet schedule and deliverables for multiple concurrent projects with a range of priorities.
  • Proficiency and experience in moderately complex to complex prototype development and testing, as well as electronics design and analysis.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience with high-power lasers and optical systems engineering.
  • Knowledge in designing optical, x-ray, neutron, or gamma ray diagnostic hardware.
  • Knowledge of small-scale lab automation (oscilloscopes, digital delay generators, power supplies, motor controllers, data acquisition systems, or similar) to accelerate the collection of test data.
