Job Description

We have multiple openings for Deputy Controls Leads for the National Ignition Facility (NIF) which is the world’s most powerful and energetic laser facility.  You will manage technical teams of 10 or more that are comprised of engineers, technical associates, and technicians supporting the controls for NIF Operations and the NIF & Photon Science PAD. You will manage resources involved with control systems design, deployment, maintenance, and operations.  These positions are in the Laser Systems Engineering & Operations (LSEO) Division, within the Engineering Directorate.

These positions will be filled at either level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

In this role, you will

  • Provide technical guidance, leadership, mentoring, and supervision to group members in the execution of their work scope with a focus on control system design, development, deployment, and maintenance; direct the strategies involved with design and analysis of electrical systems, equipment, and packages to support control systems in NIF.
  • Drive advanced engineering development using industry best practices as applied to loosely defined and complex problems and tasks.
  • Provide employment development mentoring structure for group personnel.
  • Establish superior engineering practices and standard methods and techniques among group members.
  • Collaborate with the NIF Directorate leaders and off-site collaborators to identify, manage, and allocate resources for the work assignments of group members while defining and establishing work objectives; participate in and/or lead formal and informal design reviews.
  • Provide high-level/broad troubleshooting strategies for all aspects of the NIF control system; lead and participate in controls/ICS/SIS on-call (off-hours) program.
  • Act as work permit responsible individual/approver for the Controls Engineering and Maintenance organization including responsibility for the state and operation of the NIF safety interlock system.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the SEL.4 level

  • Define and implement measures that lead to technical growth among team members.
  • Strategically position the group to support the long-term needs of NIF.
  • Responsible for high-level goal setting, strategic planning efforts, and succession planning on long range goals, working with the Controls Section Leader, NIF Operations and Facility Managers, peer Group Leaders and Engineering Division Leader / Deputy Division Leader.

Qualifications

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Significant experience and advanced knowledge with complex control systems hardware architecture including motion design, controls hardware, programmable logic controllers, and safety systems.
  • Advanced knowledge and significant experience with complex system commissioning and operations and deploying electrical, power and control systems including involved strategies.
  • Significant experience leading requirements-driven engineering activities, defining scope from often not well defined and/or rapidly changing requirements, making technical presentations and participating in design reviews.
  • Significant experience leading small teams, coordinating efforts with other groups and ensuring compatibility with interdependent systems. Demonstrated project management and supervisory skills to achieve required system performance.  Experience with mentoring team members.  
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information and provide advice to management.

Additional qualifications at the SEL.4 level

  • Subject matter expert knowledge of control system design and significant experience and knowledge in complex configuration management.  Expert knowledge and significant experience with data reduction, analysis, and interpretation; application of statistical methods as applied to reliability, availability, and maintainability (RAM).
  • Expert knowledge and significant experience in complex project engineering, project management and systems engineering. Proven track record and  ability to champion, lead, and develop innovative cutting-edge principles, strategies and concepts.
  • Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to effectively present, explain, influence, and advise senior management and external sponsors.
  • Represent the team and report out on issues to other organizations across and outside the Laboratory.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Master’s or PhD in Electrical or Computer Engineering or related field.
  • Experience developing complex LabVIEW applications for supervisory, diagnostics, automated processing and/or device level controls.
  • Significant experience in a programmatic leadership role, including functional management and overall technical leadership of a group.
  • Subject matter expert in large laser operations or laser system design.
  • Knowledge of Laboratory management and structure including supervision, policies, and procedures.
